“Coronavirus Museum” exhibits virtual Art inspired by the pandemic

The first museum in the world dedicated to the coronavirus gathers a virtual collection with works on the pandemic

In the midst of humanity’s greatest health crisis, there are people who are already managing to make art. Self-declared “the first art museum in the world born during the coronavirus quarantine “, the Instagram profile of CAM (The Covid Art Museum) brings together a virtual collection of works by artists (professional or not) who were inspired by isolation to make art.

The curious collection fed by users from all over the world, through the hashtag #CovidArtMuseum, ranges from photography to installations, through illustrations and sculptures.

The idea came up with three friends who work in advertising in Barcelona, in the first days of the quarantine in Spain, one of the countries most affected by the pandemic. Isolated and each in their own homes, the trio Emma Calvo, Irene Llorca and José Guerrero started to become interested in the artistic production that was being done on the networks. And then the question came: “What will happen to this art? Will it be forgotten after the quarantine?” Hence the idea of bringing together these curious and creative artistic manifestations produced during the period of social isolation.

“Quarantine is opening up a world of possibilities for conceiving art”, defines José Guerrero, in an exclusive interview for Nossa . According to Guerrero, CAM follows the worldwide trend of museums that are opening their collection, in a democratic and free way, in quarantine times. “A door has already been opened. Perhaps now the concerts, for example, will have virtual presentations with cheaper tickets and in a more intimate way,” says Guerrero. The posts go beyond the simple dissemination of art and, certain works, instigate the Internet user with questions about the consequences of such a long period.

The posts go beyond the simple dissemination of art and, certain works, instigate the Internet user with questions about the consequences of such a long period. In the work posted by one of the collaborators (@ valia.rs), a virus-shaped ashtray receives another cigarette butt, in reference to the increase in nicotine consumption. According to the user, “there is a morbid relationship between the cigarette and the virus, and both can kill you”. Videos can also be posted on the museum’s profile, such as the work that has already gone viral in Brazil, in which the importance of isolation is suggested. In the work, a humanized matchstick is removed from a row of other matches on fire.

The profile also bets on humorous works such as the drawing published by the user @burnttoastcreative, whose illustration shows changes in people’s clothing, such as the masks that have become part of everyday life, including the rare time to go out for sunbathing. “With the pandemic, digital has proven to be very effective, as well as the home office”, analyzes José Guerrero. Since the first publication, on March 19, the profile has already registered almost 28 thousand followers and a “collection” of about 250 publications.
